Are We Using the Bible to Follow Jesus—or to Avoid Him?

How Scripture gets weaponized when obedience threatens comfort, power, or certainty

Jesus says, “Love one another.” Some respond, “Yes, but what about this verse?”

Jesus says, “Turn the other cheek.” Some respond, “Sounds woke and weak.”

Jesus says, “Whatever you did for the least of these, you did for Me.” Some respond, “Well, personal responsibility matters.”

Jesus says, “Let the one without sin cast the first stone.” Some skip that… and sprint to “Go and sin no more.”

Jesus says, “Do not judge.” Some reply, “Love the sinner, hate the sin”—while doing far more hating than loving.

Do you see the pattern?

Some don’t reject Jesus.

They try to out-Scripture Him. They show Jesus their “buts.”

They stack verses, cherry-pick context, and weaponize passages until Jesus’ words get pushed aside.

That’s not discipleship. That’s religious cosplay.

Jesus warned about this:

“You study the Scriptures diligently… yet you refuse to come to Me to have life.” (John 5:39–40)

Translation: You’re holding the map while rejecting the destination.

And when Jesus said, “You have heard it said… but I tell you,” He wasn’t lowering the bar. He was exposing how Scripture had been used to protect comfort and power—and calling His followers back to God’s heart.

Paul said Scripture is “useful” for teaching, rebuking, correcting, and training in righteousness. (2 Timothy 3:16) But Paul also warned us to avoid “foolish and stupid arguments” and quarrels about the law—because they’re unprofitable and lead nowhere. (2 Timothy 2:23; Titus 3:9)

So here’s the big question that some don’t want to answer:

Am I using the Bible to follow Jesus…or using the Bible to dodge Jesus?

We don’t worship a book. We worship the Savior the book reveals.

Use the Bible to follow Jesus. Not to fight Him.
